And I decided to stop and ask him for a bandaid (this was, obviously, before I reached the store). I asked him repeatedly (in French) if he spoke French or English and he finally replied, "Je ne comprends pas." I was already so pissed off at circumstances that I just sort of gaped at him, then said (loudly, in case he was deaf) "Vous ne comprenez pas le français! Ah bon. Laissez faire." Yesterday I took a very long (ill-advised) walk wearing what I thought were my most comfortable sandals. But in the blazing heat, two parts of the left foot were being chafed. I stuck Kleenex over the affected areas as they became increasingly painful but the tissue kept slipping out and shredding and I kept bending down to shove it back in and at one point I was cursing at it and very, very close to tears. I finally yanked the useless kleenex out and gritted my teeth until I got to the closest store where I could buy a box of bandaids. But it was no fun. WUSS! That makes me one, too.
