The Story of Stuff

August 21, 2008 by Louise

We have so much stuff.
I don’t know where it all came from… but we have it. Like, clothes. Books. That kind of thing. SO MUCH STUFF. And half of it we don’t use. Which means it’s just clutter.

If I weren’t so lazy, I would get a truck rental (actually, don’t need to now that we have the van!) and carry this stuff to the local Salvation Army. Of course at the same time – the second I got rid of something, we would be like “Hey, where is that thing? I could really use it right about now!”

I had such big plans for this summer – and I know, it was “only” two weeks extra that we weren’t home, but two weeks is a big deal sometimes – that aren’t getting done because now that I’m finally home I just want to enjoy the little time I have left of vacation. De-cluttering was one of them.

But, Rob and I are thinking of moving next summer to a bigger place in the same area, and I have resolved that we are NOT bringing anything with us that we don’t need.

Also: We need more bookshelves. Yes we do.

I thought I was the only one. Our home looks like a street in Beirut (or any other warzone). Husband and I are both packrats – there is not one inch of floorspace that doesn’t have something on it, no table that isn’t piled high with crap.

Is it wrong that I sometimes fantasize that we lose (most) everything in a fire and have to start over? I shouldn’t have said that. Of course that would be terrible!
