I made it about 10 minutes longer than I thought, but I was probably down for the count by 6:15.
One of my first celebrity crushes (aside from Peter Pan – shut up) was Dana Carvey. You know. He went on to play the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live. My first exposure to him, though, was in the movie Opportunity Knocks. Which, despite the 1989-era hairstyles (oh, the mullets, the divine mullets!) and mooshy ending, was actually a very funny film (I was 13 the last time I saw it though so don’t take my word as law). Then he was Garth (“Party on Wayne!”) and he was in a few more movies in the late 90s early 2000s, then he seems to have disappeared.
Last night I was reminded of his existence, when Rob said “Hey look, I got Dana Carvey’s stand-up thing from March!”, so I went looking around to see what he’d been up to lately (Dana, not Rob).
He decided to take some time off, to raise his kids. Then he had a heart thing – he went in for surgery on a blocked artery… but the surgeons operated on the WRONG ARTERY. He ended up, because of the damage from that, having to have several more open-heart surgeries and other surgical procedures. He sued for malpractice, won $7.5 million, and gave the money to charity.
This happened at this year’s MTV (something) awards:
(a HORRIBLE quality video! I had found a better one yesterday but can’t find it anymore now… I’ll change it if I ever manage to find it again)
And then there’s this, from his stand-up routine this past March:
The rest of the show is much, much funnier.
And now… OFF TO MY LAST TEACHING DAY!
