mental meanderings

mental meanderings

I’m still thinking about our trip to NL. I’m really excited about it. When we went a few years ago, we brought our digital camera, but when we got home we discovered that at some point we’d lost the memory card. We’d also brought our regular film camera… but I haven’t gotten around to bringing that film (if I can even find it– we’ve moved twice since that trip) in to develop. This time we’ve got three memory cards and a laptop we can bring with us and use (if we can find any wifi around where we’re staying – Rob’s parents aren’t online) to put the pics on flickr right away.

I’ve just thought of another thing we need to do before we go: call and get some auto insurance quotes. Our insurance company is totally hosing us, methinks. My brother and his wife are paying half what we do, and they have two cars and two drivers on each car.

The list gets longer.

We need to get new window blinds and put them up in our bedroom. The curtains we have just ain’t cuttin’ it. As soon as the sun comes out, I’m UP, whether I like it or not (hint: me no like).

4 frickin 40 this morning, I was wide awake. And remained so until 6:30, 10 minutes before my alarm was set to go off. Frickin frackin.

What with our Big Trip this summer (still haven’t decided when, exactly, just that it will be this summer), we’re trying to save money. Pretty much everything we purchase is on sale (not that we’re doing a heck of a lot of purchasing, but Rob needed new shoes last week and I’m all annoyingly a user of deodorant, so…).

Still on the trip front: I’m planning on taking many, many photos while we’re there; Newfoundland is a gorgeous, gorgeous place. So I’m glad that I’m very happy with my (our… but let’s face it, my) camera; I enjoy it even more so since Rob got me a Gorillapod for Christmas. The only problem I have with the Gpod, though, is that you have to attach it to your camera, and it takes awhile to put on or take off, so if I see a really good photo that would require the use of the ‘pod, well, the photo opportunity might have passed by the time I have everything put together. Either that or I carry my camera around with the tripod permanently attached; not the best solution (and not an easy fit into the camera bag). So, I was really happy to find that there is now a quick release clip that you can leave attached to your camera, that makes attaching the Gorillapod and its little tentacley legs a pretty much instant thing. And for less than five bucks? Hooray for Joby (I also like how they mail out their stuff without packaging – well I mean it’s wrapped but they don’t have it in plastic- if you tell them to. Hoora for Joby again!)!!

Can you get Lasik if your prescription hasn’t “settled down” yet? I ask because yet again, I have a headache, and if it is due to my eyes, would getting laser eye surgery cure that, or would my eyes keep a-changin’ afterward and I’d end up needing glasses again?

Although I have had glasses since I was 7 so I don’t really even like how I look without my face furniture.

I am generally very, very happy with my work. My room is great, nice and big (although sometimes it seems small what with classes of 34, 35). Things I would change:

- better office furniture (or at least, my chair – every single office chair in this place is squeeeeeeeaky)

- kids’ desks that don’t have insides – they throw all their garbage and old paper in them and I’m not overly fond of having to clean up after them every day. The board is paying for one room per year to get all new desks so eventually this will happen.

- better shelving. I have one bookshelf in my room. I have way more books than the shelf can hold.

Even though I complain, though, it’s very minor. I love (LOVE) working here. My windows open and close, no problems. My own desk is *huge*, with drawers that open and close without a struggle, so I can keep it neat(er). I can get in and out of the building without having to call 95 people to get a key on weekends and in the evenings.

So yeah, it’s all good.

Headache. Sore eyes. I now commence ignoring all screens for the next few hours.

(Edited to add, the next morning:) I’m beginning to suspect I need new eyeglasses or something; I’ve been getting headaches like this at least twice a week lately at the end of the day. But I just got a new prescription last year so my insurance won’t cover a new pair until next January or whenever. Feh.

And this bird you cannot change

And this bird you cannot change

My husband is under the spell of a squeaky, plastic guitar. As I blog, he and his friend Ashley are sitting on the sofa, competing against each other for who can best play Free Bird. He might be winning – I don’t know. I can’t say I don’t see the appeal of Guitar Hero – I’ve done a little rockin’ on ‘I Wanna Be Sedated‘, myself. And at least he’s not spending his nights and our hard-earned cash at the poker tables. But I have heard “Raining Blood” so many times that I believe I will be humming it in my sleep.

Also, check out my husband’s cute fingers with their cute freckles! Sometimes I just sit beside him and play connect-the-dots on his arms. I love him.
