Another week over. I love my new place of work about 80000% more than I liked where I was last year, but still– I’m always glad when the weekend comes.
This weekend has been exhausting, both physically and mentally. First of all starting the week with the Explosive Belly Sickness ™. Plus having bouts of insomnia. Plus, something else that I haven’t mentioned here as of yet.
One of my students is turning 12 this weekend. But first, before her birthday on Sunday, she has to attend her brother’s funeral on Saturday. Her younger brother died of cancer this week. He’s been fighting the disease for a couple of years, but eventually his brain and spine became riddled with tumours; he was in and out of a coma most of last week. His family decided last Friday to take him off of life support and at one point during the weekend when he was conscious, he told his mother that he was ready to go. He slipped away on Monday and, as I said, the funeral is tomorrow.
Today our school participated in the Terry Fox Run, not only in memory of this little boy whose life was stolen from him, but in the hopes that we would be able to help Terry Fox’s dream come closer to reality.
(Terry Fox is a major hero of mine; I could go on forever about him but I think you’re better off just reading this).
The past 25 years have brought many, many improvements in the field of cancer research. Hopefully the next 25 will bring a cure.
