  1. Holy Crap!

    August 20, 2007 by Louise

My friend D sent me a very interesting photo this morning. Did you know Superman could do this?

  3. I don’t know what this says about me. Or about other people.

    August 17, 2007 by Louise

A snippet of an MSN conversation between a friend and I this morning…

Friend: So! Your anniversary’s coming up!

Me: That’s right– one year on Sunday.

Friend: What are you doing to celebrate?

  4. I wanted to ask this the other day but I forgot…

    August 16, 2007 by Louise

    … so I’m asking now.

What do you think of astrology? Do you think it’s a load of crap, or do you think there’s something to it? Do you agree with the description of your personal zodiac sign? I mentioned that I’m a Cancer, and basically Cancers are supposed to be homebodies, generally introverted, intuitive, crybabies ;) — and I tend to agree with that, sure. So do you agree with yours? No? Why or why not?

(by the way, here’s a link to the website I found the other day when looking for info on my sign but I’m sure there are thousands of others out there)

  5. Help a sister out ?

    by Louise

What exactly do teenagers like to receive, giftwise?

    Namely teenage boys?

A teenager in my life will soon be having a birthday — he’ll be turning 14– and he needs a gift from me. I hesitate to just give him cash (my general gift to teenagers– cash or gift cards) because I know that his parent will end up “borrowing” it and well, that’s not exactly a gift, is it? He doesn’t expect a gift or anything, but he won’t be getting much at all, and I like giving to him because he’s not one of those “huge sense of entitlement” kids who don’t appreciate things.
He’s into: music, cars, girls. Typical teenage boy stuff.

So. RC cars? CDs? Although, do people even buy CDs anymore? Some kind of poster of a half naked lady? I DO NOT KNOW.

When did I become Out Of Touch with Youth? How has this happened? Who are we kidding though… I didn’t know what the 14 year old boys wanted when I was 14… how should I know now?

    So, help me out, y’all.

  6. Sadness, too.

Julie has suffered a horrible loss. Reading things like this really helps me to put things like being bilked out of wig money into perspective.

  7. Hooray!

    by Louise

A friend of mine had an entry in a contest at the Guggenheim, and she found out today that her entry came in second place. So hooray! Good job, A! That is such excellent validation.

  8. Home Improvement

    by Louise

We live in a rented house. I realize this and I know that some people think “hey, it’s not really your house, why bother decorating?” I can’t get behind that sentiment, though. First because we plan on living here for quite awhile, unless we suddenly have seventeen kids and need to build ourselves a new place. Second because I’d probably try to pretty up a foxhole and make it cozy. My friend says it’s because I’m 100% Cancer (zodiac sign, not disease– speaking of which… I hate that my zodiac sign is also a DISEASE), and I can see it… according to the linked website, I am “the consummate homemaker”. And it’s true. Having a pretty, comfortable home is important to me.

I think this house is very nice. It was really solidly built in the 1950s. The floors are all hardwood and still in good shape considering their age. The basement is huge, and doesn’t leak, so we have some great storage space. High ceilings, great huge windows, big yard, all kinds of stuff. On the flip side, the closets were built for elves and the countertop and lighting fixtures in the kitchen are straight out of 1981 (I mean it– when my family first moved to the Island, we lived in the house next door to this one, and these are the exact same hanging globes). The walls are pure white, and until we decide on paint colours, that’s the way they’re gonna stay.

We’ve started making a few improvements, though. Eventually the light fixtures will be replaced– I’m thinking of maybe something from kichler lighting. They have some nice light fixtures over there; maybe not exactly perfect for kitchens though (so if you have suggestions, I want to know!).

We have pretty curtains up in most of the rooms (sadly, the guestroom is still sporting some pink monstrosities, and there’s nothing up in the kitchen at the moment), we’re slowly but surely re-covering the ugliness that is our livingroom set (covered bridges anyone?), and we’ve got some gorgeous art up on the walls, including a plate made for me by my mother’s father, our wedding painting, from Meg, needlepoint from Erika, and as of this afternoon, two gorgeous photographs that DJ brought us.

Yep, things are starting to shape up.

Of course I say this, and this same time next year, I’ll probably STILL be trying to figure out what colour to paint the walls.

(this long rambling post brought to you courtesy of Cancer’s tendency to have creative thought at night)
(and also by the fact that I had some soda and now I’m AWAKE)

  9. Gauntlets of the Dishpan Hands

    August 14, 2007 by Louise

I must admit that even though I’ve had the entire summer off.. well, not much has gotten done around here, chore-wise. Yes, we keep up with normal stuff, like doing laundry (me) and putting out the garbage (Rob) and such, but window-washing? Floor-scrubbing? Eh, not so much. Two things I hate: chores, and keeping track of money. Which is stupid, because I am *so* house-proud (won’t let anyone in if it’s messy) and cheap (I’m constantly worried about money, so if I actually like, LOOKED at our finances once in awhile instead of leaving Rob to do it, maybe that would show me that NO WE’RE NOT PAUPERS and I need to CHILL THE HELL OUT) that you’d think I’d take more of an interest in both of these things.

Over the past week or so we’ve been discussing keeping a neater house — neither of us will ever, EVER be classified as neat freaks, and what with me being a packrat to boot, well, things tend to pile up around here– and we actually have been working harder at it the past couple of days (one of our ‘new’ rules is that if it will take less than 2 minutes to do something, DO IT NOW– which is working out pretty well. I’m not leaving my used glasses all over the house, anyway). Rob, of course had to take it one step further, and find a way to make it fun. Well, if not fun, then at least nerdy. And Nerdy is my middle name, folks (actually Frances is my middle name, but hey, same difference). Thus, the discovery of Chore Wars.

    No, I’m not kidding.

I have never been into RPG’s, but I think I might actually get into this one. Now all Rob has to do is find some kind of super-fun budgeting software, and we’ll be all set.

  10. Quickies

    by Louise

    Because I love point form:

    - Our weekend was pretty awesome. Aside from the floorcake, Rob had a good birthday.

    - We got to hang out with DJ for a couple of hours on Saturday. She is just as funny and cool as she sounds on her ‘blog. Which is very.

    - My mom filled me in on all the family news. My uncle (who lives in the family home) is busy trying to clear out some of Grandma’s stockpiled things. She had everything from several pair of brand new unworn men’s shoes to disposable underwear (also unworn– she didn’t need them but wanted to be prepared in case she ever did — this is the same woman who taught herself to write with her left hand in case she ever had a stroke and lost the use of her right hand)) to three artificial Christmas trees — this after she had given one to Rob and I last year. Packrattery is genetic, methinks.

    - We went minigolfing and such on Sunday. Glow in the Dark minigolf. It was fun. It was also free, because my mother used to work with the owner of the place (back when they were both in the military) and he sends her free passes every year.

    - That is All.
