Sweet :)

Sweet :)

Rob is a total sweetie who, yesterday when we were grocery shopping, snuck off and plucked these flowers for me.

Er, maybe he bought them, since it’s the middle of winter here. But whatever.

(pic kinda sucks cos it was taken with the webcam in the middle of the night. Still, though, sweet, inne?

I have been having the hardest week! First, work started. Without going into details, basically it’s pretty good but there is one element that is making me cry when I come home everyday which diminishes the pretty-goodness of the rest.
Which, I started the week with a voice that was going, and by Wednesday it was completely gone, so basically I only worked three days this week anyway so maybe I should give things a chance but when you have people throwing things at you … okay but no complaining! Because I’m being positive!
On Wednesday my mother got us two (count ‘em! TWO!) desks from Freecycle. The woman is amazing. At first we were thinking “WHY DO WE NEED TWO DESKS?!” but duh! One for the computer, one for my work stuff. Good job mom! We were finally able to take the computer off the kitchen table and put it into the office (what… a month after moving in? that’s not bad, is it? IS IT?!) but after Rob had hooked it up, it wouldn’t boot. It wouldn’t do anything. We panicked. I mean, sure, there’s the whole business of blogging and surfing and entertainment, but there’s also the fact that I use this thing for so much of my work, it’s not funny. Off to our local computer repairman it went (this was beyond even Rob’s expertise– I know, I know, doesn’t seem possible, does it? but Rob knows about software, and this was a hardware thing), with us praying that it wouldn’t cost us our first-born. We got it back yesterday for the relatively low price of $60 I think– Rob is going to explain this but from what I understand it was some tiny computery thing inside that died so they took it out, and now we only have one of those tiny things but the computer works again, just more slowly. And in two weeks we will get another one of those things, and the computer will be back up to speed.
I am so 7331 with the techspeak.
And now, from lattégirl, I have stolen a meme. Here you have it:

I guess it was pre-emptive panic?

I guess it was pre-emptive panic?

My dad was in a car accident last night. He’s okay, from what my mom tells me, but his truck is totaled. He was in the left-turn lane, signal on and everything, when this person came and rear-ended him going 95 km/h (around 60 mph?). Of course he decided that he was fine and didn’t need to go to the hospital but I think he should have because that is what I think.

This was after an utterly crappy first day at school (YES I AM TRYING TO BE POSITIVE AND YES THINGS WILL GET BETTER BUT YESTERDAY WAS NOT THE BEST OKAY?) and me falling asleep on the couch at 6 pm, only to be awoken by my mother and sister showing up at 8 pm to give us this news. Because we still have no phone. Not that I’m complaining.

She's a maniac, maniac…

She's a maniac, maniac…

Tonight Rob and I had to go put gas in the car (I want one of those cars that runs on leftover chip oil. Jack, I swear) and on the way back, we saw an ambulance. It was headed from the direction of my parents’ house (now when I say this, I mean the direction of their village which, remember, is a 25-minute drive west of us) toward the hospital.
I immediately started thinking “Oh my God what if it’s my Dad? Oh no oh no” and panicking. I realize it’s stupid, and I know that I shouldn’t always make things so dramatic, but I did, and that’s all. I guess I just still have residual fear for him, after what happened last year, even though his doctors say he’s fine now… I can’t help thinking that it could happen again.
So we got home and of course, we don’t have a phone… I did manage to get ahold of my nephew on MSN and told him to phone my parents’ right away and see if everything was alright.
The cool thing about Billy is that he’ll just lay into a quick weird command from a friend, whereas some guys might look around to see what’s precipitating the weirdness. He called right away and everything was fine. So I’m not panicking anymore. Still though… what the hell?

Oh make me over

Oh make me over

Last night, in a barely lucid moment, I decided to try out the makeover programs on ivillage.com (you might need to create a login) . I’m sure most of you have done it before, but if you haven’t, it’s tons of fun. Upload a pic of yourself (our digital camera is doing this weird freak-out thing now where it just keeps turning itself on and off and on and off so I used the webcam which is a weird way of taking pictures, let me tell you) , then you can mess around with different hairstyles/colours, makeup, hats, sunglasses, etc. etc.
I think my favourite of the night was me with Nicole Kidman’s hair.

Speaking of hair, I washed my wig yesterday and, well, that’s one thing you have to get used to with non-synth wigs. Synthetic ones, once they dry, just go right back into their style; the most you have to do is shake it a little and it looks great. Real hair? Last for years longer than synthetic, feels better, has so many benefits but it’s just like normal hair. Whoever’s hair I have, they didn’t have the least bit of body in theirs so yeah, I look like Steve Perry or something right now. Must find curlers.

From now on, if I’m planning on waking up before 6 am, I have to make sure that I am actually asleep before midnight. I have decreed it.

See, I have to leave for work at 7:15, 7:30 at the latest (it’s a 45-minute drive, and I like to get there at least half an hour before students… today is a PD day so I can leave a bit later but whatever) and LORD I DON’T LIKE THIS WAKING UP SO TIRED BUSINESS. Of course I’ve been having huge trouble getting to sleep lately. Yesterday I started getting tired around 9 but lo and behold some company showed up unannounced at 9:15 and stayed until 11 and I had only gotten home from work at 8:30 or something so I hadn’t spent any time with Rob and I missed him so yeah, I didn’t get to sleep until past 12. Needless to say I am hell of tired right now and can’t seem to get going. Which I need to do, seeing as it’s almost 7:10 and I’m not dressed yet.

My goal for tonight: Asleep by 10. Yes, on a Friday night. YES I KNOW I AM A NERD. But I’m tired, yo.

Thursday

Thursday

Oh, yesterday was such a nice day! At 6 am, Rob came into the room and snuggled me (what he was doing up at that ungodly hour is beyond me– the alarm wasn’t set to ring for another 20 minutes), telling me that school was cancelled and I could sleep in. I think I believed him because the next thing I remember was waking up at 8:30, all grumpy that the wind was making noises, and coming downstairs to knit.
And that’s how the rest of the day went– knit, hot chocolate, knit some more, watch Empire Records, more hot chocolate… all in all a great day. Well, sort of. See, I *was* scheduled to work yesterday, but when you’re subbing, if school’s cancelled, you don’t get paid (woo! for full-time employment starting tomorrow! Which means paid sick days and storm days! Even though, I found out yesterday, they’re not sure what I’m teaching yet contrary to what they told me back in December! So they’ll tell me on Friday! And I’ll start teaching it on Monday! Thanks for the prep time dudes!) so there’s $100 down the drain. But, I’m subbing today (school is definitely not cancelled) and working tonight, so… yeah. Income income. I’m such a cash-whore.
