Good morning, starshine.

February 26, 2006 by Louise

First off I have to say: If I owe you an email or anything– I’m really sorry I’m such a slacker! The meds I’m on at the moment not only make me forget how to pee, they also make me forget how to stay awake any later than 8 pm (seriously! well, last night I made it til 9, but that’s because it was Saturday and I slept in this morning) and anything more than getting my homework done and then mindless websurfing/tv watching is beyond my realm of possibility at the moment. Hopefully soon I’ll get used to these side effects and be back to my sub-stellar, but more emaily self.
A couple of you have asked how my boss took my email. He didn’t really have much to say about it, just “Sorry to hear about your illness; do you need me to call a sub”. I have a feeling he wasn’t extremely impressed (would you be?) but there’s not much he can do about it and my substitute seems to have done well. I have now used up all my allowed sick days from now until June though so I’d better just be on the ball, if I wanna keep getting paid. One very good thing that happened though, is that in my absence he decided that one of my classes was too big — 36 kids– and pared it down to 23. It made such a huge difference on Friday, I must tell you. Oh my goodness, such a difference. Also, I’m not sure what they told people I was out for– most people assumed I’d had the flu or something and I didn’t tell them otherwise.
So, work on Friday. It actually went fairly well. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, yes, you know me, all doom and gloom one day (“This job sucks! I will never be able to handle it!”) and Miss Happy Sunshine the next. I can’t help it, though. I just feel things so deeply, it’s hard to be neutral. Anyway. In the middle of my first-period class one of the girls was called down to the office, and when she came back, she handed me these (sorry, huge pic, can’t help it). The class had, of their own accord, each given a dollar or something, and bought me flowers. How sweet of them! I was so surprised– like, about ready to faint. My other two classes, even though they’re “tough” classes, were just as sweet. A few of them asked me how my mother was doing (by the way, my mother is out of the ICU– in fact they sent her home on Saturday or Sunday I can’t remember– they never figured out what was wrong with her, and she’s still in pain, but she’s home now with pain meds), some of them asked how I was doing, and they all said they were glad to have me back. So that’s good.

Oh! Another thing is that Rob and I went to Michael’s yesterday and my semi-craftiness has led to the creation of a prototype for our wedding invitations. There are a couple of things that need tweaking (I think we may go with a wider ribbon, for one, and obviously there would be actual writing on the vellum) but it’s good, yes? No? I realize it’s not particularly out-of-this-world creative but we likes it and that’s gotta count for something. Meg is busily working away at something we’re going to use for our upcoming wedding page, and I think these invitations will sort of go with that theme, so I’m happy.
Oh! And? We found a church that will take us on the date that we were hoping for. So yeah, August 19th, 2 pm. Since Rob isn’t Catholic they’re not going to do the whole long Mass (I’m sure that will be a relief to most of the guests). We went to Mass there last night to check the place out (and also because I just wanted to and you know me, I always get what I want) and it’s nice enough. We didn’t get to see our regular priest though. They had some guest guy in and uhm… well let’s just say he was very … lackluster. Not that it isn’t wrong of me to be critiquing his performance! Oh no! I’m in trouble now!

That is SO DAMN SWEET of the class to buy you flowers! I am freaking amazed!
No class in my high school would have been that nice, especially to a brand new teacher. An “old” and loved one, perhaps… maybe… if pigs were flying that day. But a brand new teacher? NO. WAY.
SO ~ you must be doing something right! They like you and care!

Hey, that kicks bunches of asses that they’re not forcing you to do the Marriage Prep crap, so common in Catholic churches around these parts. That shit takes 4-6 months, and if one of ya isn’t cathoholic they really press you into joining up. Oyyyyeeeeee.

I LOVE the invites! I’ve never seen a cool one like that, seriously :)

(Glad work went good for you too, btw!)

Very, very sweet of your kids to present you with flowers. Now you have extra guilt built into the job! Good that the boss cut the class size and that you found it more manageable. Sometimes it’s the little things that help make someone’s day.

As for the sleepiness… I start yawning hugely and repeatedly at 5 PM every day. It drives me crazy, because it’s too early to go to bed for real and too late to nap. I find going for a swim helps (it doesn’t hurt that the pool is 10 seconds away from the front door) or a walk. It perks me up enough that I’m OK for the evening, but still ready to get to bed at a decent hour. Plus — they say every hour of sleep we get before midnight is the best sleep of the night. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know.
