SO MUCH MOVING.
1- We’re moving. Tomorrow. But you knew that though so I won’t go on (aside from oh sweet crispy jesus we sure did pick great days for it; the humidity’s like 9000% and it’s hot and blaaaaaaaaaah)
2- Rob has gotten his own domain — in his words “Not because I don’t want to be associated with the super awesomeness that is cowdog, but because it was such a good deal that I couldn’t pass it up”. I went to look at it today and he was busy in the night when I was sleeping (yes, he packed, too, but everyone deserves a break). I personally think this is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen. It may just be because I know his dad and everything, but seriously. It’s funny. I mean it. Go look now.
3- Okay I don’t have anything else to say about people moving around or stuff moving around or whatever. But I do have other news.
4- The Best News In The World (for me, anyway) is that my brother’s second child was born yesterday, July 19th, at 6:23 pm. It’s another boy. His name is Dawson Gerard and I’m an aunt for the fifth time. In case anyone’s wondering, he’s not named after Dawson’s Creek or anything like that (if he had been I’d have preferred Pacey). It’s just that the name Dawson means “son of [my brother's name]” and they liked that. I’m kind of glad they had a boy because I really, reallyreally didn’t like the name they had picked out for him if he had turned out to be a girl. So! I’ll have one more reason to be all excited about moving.
My brother and his wife are amazing parents. I mean, their (almost) two-year-old is so good. And not good in the way that he’s scared of his parents so he’s all downtrodden or anything; he’s a regular, exuberent kid who likes to run around making screeching noises and waving his arms in the air, and all the other normal little-kid stuff. But he also knows that when Mom or Dad say “that’s dangerous”, they mean it, and he stops. They spend time with him and play games with him — they don’t just set him down in front of the TV and walk away (well they probably do sometimes, just not for 12 hours a day). Plus. Plus! As a teacher I enjoy this part, by the way: he knows his colours. It might not seem like a big deal but I mean there are kids starting grade one who don’t know the difference between blue and orange. Not because they’re colourblind or anything, but because there really are a lot of parents who figure that anything having to do with teaching your kids should only take place in school. Okay. Enough rambling on. I’m happy, Rob’s happy, my brother and sister in law are happy, their older son is happy (well, aside from not understanding why Mummy’s not at home yet). It’s all good.
5- I guess I do have something else to say about moving. Instead of towing our car behind the u-haul, my sister is coming over on the shuttle and driving our car back. Saves money, methinks. And I was super nervous about the towing part because I have never towed anything before (although I’m really excited about driving the big truck. Yeah that’ll probably get old after 20 minutes). Plus my sister is Super Organized and Able To Help With The Packing. I, as you may know, am Not Super Organized. My ADD has kicked into overdrive (it’s times like these I wish for a fistful of ritalin). Basically I need someone to tell me where to start, and give me instructions as to what to do, and then… hmm. do it for me? heh, yeah, that would be nice. No. We’re muddling through, we’re muddling through. We’ll be packing up until the very last minute but it shall be done (if you’re saying “Then why are you on the computer right now you addict” I say this to you: BECAUSE I AM SWEATY AND DUST-STREAKED AND MY HANDS HAVE TAPE GOO ON THEM AND I NEED A BREAK THAT’S WHY SO YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND SUCK IT).
Although one thing that I don’t like is that last night we went out for probably half an hour to buy garbage bags (this is a hell of a way to do a Clean Sweep, let me tell you — yay freecycle! except some of the people haven’t showed up to get their stuff yet and if they don’t soon I’m giving it to the second in line people and then the first people will be sad) and each of us thought the other had the cellphone, and neither of us did and as a result of this whole rigmarole we missed our friends coming over to say goodbye to us and I don’t like that not one bit! Hopefully we’ll see them before they go. That’s the one thing I hate about our Giant Leap — I feel like we’re slinking off into the night without saying goodbye to anyone and we really don’t mean to it’s just that we need to go, now, and have so very little time and so much to do and … sigh. I suck, I know.
And with that I’m getting back to the So Much To Do. Even though I’m still sweaty and bleh.
Congrats, Auntie again!
Good luck with the move… at least it will be over quickly!!
good luck with the move…sounds like a very good decision
and congrats on the new little one…being an auntie rocks!!!
Your way of taking a break reminds me of how I take a break from studying for exams. By housecleaning.
But your way is much more enjoyable I’m sure.
About “parents who figure that anything having to do with teaching your kids should only take place in school”: it wasn’t that long ago …
OK, it was 44 years ago when my mother started a day care. (Maybe the first ever day care in Nova Scotia?)
She was specifically told by school teachers and administration that she should NOT teach the little ones their colours, how to tie their shoes, how to colour inside the lines, etc. etc. – because that would give them an advantage over the rest of their classmates when they did start going to school.
Enough rambling off topic – congrats on your new auntie-ship. And best of luck on your move.
Happy knitting (in cooler times)
