Hypothetically…

Hypothetically…

Say you went to your doctor. And say you told your doctor that your depression medications seem to have stopped working, but you’re not sure if it’s because you’ve had a lot of stressful things happening in your life lately or the meds just didn’t work.
Now say your doctor upped your meds. Then she tells you you need to stop sitting at home in front of the fridge, eating. Then she tells you that if you have to, you should put duct tape over your mouth.

Hypothetically, would this annoy you at all, given the fact that you haven’t been eating any more than you were before; in fact you’re basically living on cheerios and salads?

Just, you know, hypothetically.

  1. you need a new doctor. seriously. new doctor post haste. ask for a referal from the doctor who ‘gets you’. they probably know of some good GPs.

and don’t forget, weight gain can be a side effect of the meds. on paxil i gained 40lbs. then i went off, didn’t lose an ounce, then had to go back on paxil a couple years later and gained another 40lbs. having said that, i would much rather be fat with a will to live than not fat and completely apathetic and hating life and miserable.

the one thing i have noticed though, which is a bit of a catch 22, is that if you exercise more it really does help with the mood stabelization. it’s a catch 22 ’cause you feel crappy so you don’t want to work out, but you’re not working out, so you feel crappier.

  2. I think we sometimes need a doctor who will tell us things we don’t want to hear.

However, we also need that doctor to act with tact and for them to be sure of what they’re talking about before they say anything.

You certainly don’t want to find another doctor who will only tell you what you want to hear, but you do need to find one who knows what they’re talking about.

  3. Oh my word…what a slap to the face. Your doc sounds like an ass and would appear to have zero tact.
If this is not the first time that inappropriate comments like the aforementioned have been made to you, I would strongly suggest a complaint to your provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons. ‘Nuff said.

  4. I totally agree that your GP was WAY outta line here! I would also be tempted to shove that duct tape where the sun don’t shine!

I know that one of the side effects of anti-depressants can be weight gain, so talking with another doctor (preferably a psychiatrist who is better schooled in anti-depressants and their side effects) would definitely be in order. There is no one “cure all” medicine, especially where depression is concerned. Sometimes it takes a while to get the right one to work for you.

Also, if you’re only eating Cheerios and salad, I’d be looking at how you can alter your diet to be more well-rounded. I know that may have been said in jest, but eat a balanced diet will seriously help your body a LOT. I know you have some dietary restrictions, but I’d be willing to make some suggestions if you shoot me an email.

Hope you’re feeling better soon, hon!

  5. Found you from “our” Yahoo group. I still think she’s a bitch. Yeah, its time for a new doc. Even some of the idiots I’ve worked for would never say that to a patient.

  6. unless there was an actual medical reason for the doctor to have said that, i would be really annoyed and put a complaint in and change doctors and write the doc a letter with a huge “fuck you” in bold….what an inconserate bastard!

  7. is your doctor physic ? does she need to lose weight ? does she need to get rid of a moustache (duct-tape helps …. painfully) ?

or does she want to lose patients?

i’d get another doctor- ASAP. good luck :)

  8. I had to switch doctors before because of that crap. One gave me medication that was not working… and would not switch me off of it. As soon as I switched, I was much better. Only you know if the medication is working or not. Also, weight gain is totally a side effect of AD’s. Totally. I used to be a damn toothpick. But I decided I wanted to be sane and worry about my weight after.
